Color-omitted Errors
Who Whitewashed the Inscriptions?
Tom Sawyer.  1972.
Engraved black and red omitted
Scott No. 1470b
We might suspect that Tom is to blame.  The mischief of the missing inscription and denomination is all too reminiscient of the mischief Tom himself is so well known for.  Charming and impossible to resist.
"We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto . . ."
Rural America.  1974.
Black and dark blue omitted
Scott No. 1506a
With all due respect to Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, this actually looks a whole like the sprawling wheatfields of Kansas, devoid of typography, of course.  A wonderfully striking omission.
This isn't Kansas, either.
Kentucky Settlement.  1974.
Black, dark green,  green and blue omitted
Scott No. 1542b
What makes this error so compelling is that there exists little in the way of visual evidence to identify or place the scene.  The lack of contrast between the yellows and oranges and the stamp's white background further enhances the bizarre quality of this error.  Only 29 examples are known to exist.
